Summer
Teacher's Institute
This annual multi-day "hands-on" program
allows educators to experience Maine agriculture through field trips to
area farms and agricultural facilities. Participants receive educator re-certification
credits (42 credits were granted at the 2009 conference) and are trained
in and presented with various agricultural curricula (such as the Project
Food, Land & People), and are able to network with agricultural experts.
Read “ME” Agriculture
Read "ME" Agriculture is a very successful new program we began in 2008, which reached over 3500 students across the state, and which will return during Ag Week (March 16 – 20) 2009. Volunteers will read and give books about agriculture to Kindergarten – 4th Grade classrooms across the state. Then they will tell the students about their farms or connections to agriculture and leave behind lessons and information for the teachers to use.

MAITCA has developed a guide to help teachers connect to Maine Farms and Agribusinesses that will host field trips or present in the classroom. All entries will be correlated with lessons that are previously aligned with the Maine Learning Results. Download--as PDFs--the complete Guide, correlated lessons (included in the Guide), and the welcome letter. |

Maine Agriculture in the Classroom (MAITC) Teacher of the Year
Our 2009-2010 application is here: [MS Word] [pdf]
Each year, the MAITC Association recognizes an outstanding Maine elementary or secondary school teacher who uses agricultural education materials and/or activities in the classroom to such an extent as to merit our special award. The winning teacher is then encouraged to submit--with our help--an application for a National AITCA Excellence in Teaching About Agriculture award and to attend the National AITCA Conference (the 2009 event was in St. Louis, MO from June 24th - 27th), and is also invited to our annual Summer Teacher's Conference (a.k.a. Summer Institute) free of charge.
