Back to Full Index March 27, 2008 CANADIAN AGRONOMIST TO HIGHLIGHT CUBA WEEK ACTIVITIESPlease join the Brunswick-Trinidad Sister City Association (BTSCA) for a very special talk by Canadian agrologist and author Wendy Holm. Her talk, Eating Local, Acting Global--Making a Difference in Castro's Cuba “will be an opportunity to look over the sides of the box and see what is happening elsewhere. In a land where, despite all its problems, farmers are deeply respected, food production is both understood and valued by the community, and food is an important part of culture,” according to Holm. The talk is the culmination of Cuba Week 2008 and will be held at Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick on April 5 from 10:00am to 1:00pm. It is free and open to the public.
For the past nine years, Holm led exchanges between farmers and chefs from Canada and Cuba to explore the principles of sustainable agriculture. As the title of her talk suggests, she will be looking at “how a focus on local food from local farmers can bring us to a deeper appreciation of food and those who produce and prepare it. Her talk will be delivered over a photo slide show of the connections Canada has made with Cuba by bringing down delegations of farmers and chefs, entomologists and students and by leading an international, farmer to farmer cooperative dairy project that is on the cutting edge of conservation agriculture.”
We hope that your members and students will join us as we get ready to plant, harvest, purchase and prepare this summer’s crops! For more information, please contact Genie Wheelwright at gwheelwright@suscom-maine.net.
